Business and InfoTech Links

This page is here solely to help people find some worthwhile sites to further their knowledge or abilities in the rapidly expanding infotech world. Some are just download sites. Others are simply for learning. I've provided a little description of each one before you take off there. Enjoy! - MRT

These are in no particular order

TuCows.Com

This is THE place to go to download software from the internet. Some is free, some isn't. It's divided by operating system, and then by type of software (email, audio, browsers, security, etc). Also, the site analyzes the software and gives it a "cow" rating. This ranges between 2 and 5 cows, 5 being the highest rating (The cows are little .gif pictures attached after the product description). Also after the description, there is a link to where the software can be downloaded.

About.Com

Great for researching on line. Not only does this give links to almost any media source, journal, or publication which places anything on line, it also divides it up and organizes it very well. This is a great source if you don't have an excellent library at your fingertips.

Metacrawler

Metacrawler is my choice of search engines. It is actually a "Meta-search engine". It uses all the others (Yahoo, Excite, MiningCo, AltaVista, and many more). But instead of giving you half a million hits like many others, it generally provides the 40 most pertinent sites to your input ranked from top to bottom. I've had excellent luck with this site and can generally find something, if it exists ANYWHERE, within about 10 minutes. No matter what search engine a site might send keywords to (and pay a fee to), Metacrawler will find it.

IPO Central

Run by Hoovers, this is probably the best look at IPO's before, during filing, and after going public. It gives detailed information on the company and allows you to download any SEC information.

Quote.Yahoo.Com

Probably one of the most popular sites for business people. This gives updated stock and bond info within 20 minutes of real time. It also lets you personalize your portfolio in about any manner you want. Getting an account does not require a credit card number.

Case Western HTML Class

Learn HTML programming from the university rated number 1 in Wired's 1998 list of "wired schools". This school's site and the information about it is worth checking out.

MindSpring

If you are as sick of AOL as I am, this is a great place to go to get universal internet access. It's cheaper than AOL, and actually provides more phone numbers and service providers. Also, it is not so sickly tied to Microsoft.

I'm sure I'll think of more of these in time...and find more as I go. If you have any you think might belong here, write me at [email protected]
